Many uneducated cryptocurrency users leave their coins on exchanges such as Binance or Coinbase. While this is the easy choice, you might be compromising security! If you do not hold your private keys, you do NOT own your coins.

This guide will cover Stellar Lumens wallets in depth. If you are interested in purchasing the currency, check out our other guide on buying Stellar Lumens.

Ledger Nano S Wallet Setup Guide

Using the Micro-USB cable included in the box, connect your computer and Ledger Nano S.

Upon activation, you will be prompted for a pin code. This code is entered when you are trying to access the device anytime it is accessed after being off. This is the first line of security.

Using the left and right buttons to cycle up and down, create your pin code.

Click in both buttons when you are ready to continue. The PIN code should be AT LEAST 4 characters long, but the longer the better.

Next, you will be shown the 24 word recovery phrase. This is extremely important to remember, and should be written down and secured somewhere safe.

Using the right button to cycle the words, continue until you reach the last word. You will now be asked to confirm the index location of a word.

This is basically confirming your list contains the words in the correct order. This recovery is very important for recovering your coins if the Ledger is broken or stolen.

Using Google Chrome, download the Ledger Manager application. This app is basically your computers interface for the Ledger Wallet.

In the manager, you will see a list of several coins, download the Stellar Application.

After downloading the Stellar Application, go on your Ledger and turn on Browser Support. This can be done by going to the Stellar Icon on your Ledger, clicking both buttons on Settings, and again on Browser Support and selecting “Yes”.

We are almost done! Now, go to the Official Stellar Account Viewer and click “Sign in with Ledger.”

You can now send Lumens to your Ledger Lumens address from an exchange or where your Lumens are currently stored.

Official Stellar Desktop Setup

Start off by downloading the correct version for your computer off of the Stellar Lumen GitHub. This tutorial will demonstrate how to intall and use the Mac OS x version. Other versions should be similar. Once the file is downloaded, open the application.

I am assuming you do not already have an account, so create a new one! In the event that you do have a Stellar account, import your existing secret key.

After clicking create a new account, you will be prompted to specify a location for your encrypted private key. Put this in a secure location, and create a backup on another device such as a USB. You will be asked for a password, make this secure, but something you will remember.

After entering a password, you be shown information about your new wallet, such as your send address, and your secret key. Write down and keep your secret key somewhere in case you need to recover your coins.

Click “Yes, I Saved my secret key” when you are all done.

We are now in the wallet, from here you can send and recieve Lumens to friends and other users!
